Steve Sage is a part-time professional wildlife and nature photographer. He lives in Lansing Michigan and is often found photographing subjects in his backyard nature preserve. He has been involved in photography for nearly 40 years and is a former student of Larry West. His nature photography was largely influenced in the early years by the work of Larry West and John Shaw. He has presented programs for a number of organizations and often donates work for conservation, environmental and nature education organizations. He is active in birding, kayaking, canoeing, bicycling and adventure travel.
When I capture an image my intent is to evoke some of the excitement that I have experienced in my vision with what the viewer sees in the photograph. I could wish that everything I show would be a fine art image but that is not a realistic expectation. The quest for the perfect light and composition has a whole adventure of experiences and observations along the way that make the journey worthwhile, at least to me. Photography has helped me to get out and experience my environment, become a better naturalist and to "see the light". I'd like to say that my goals would be to help conserve habitats, protect the environment, save the planet. That goal is something that can start by simply sharing an appreciation of nature. I also like the low impact nature of photographic adventures in keeping with a take only pictures and leave only footprints philosophy.
